I've suffered from metal allergy since I was a teen. I've learned that any nickel in a metal is the most common metal to cause itching and rash (and in my case bleeding). So I avoid anything that might have metal in it and I am fine. Just a thought.

If you suspect a possible metal allergy – wearing gloves (to keep from "allergically" touching it), clean the metal object up very well then spray with 2 coats of clear acrylic spray paint.  Let "bake" dry in the sun for a couple hours.
Since this has to do chickens as well, a clear coating like that won't get their attention to fear their pecking on or anything either. 
         Just a suggested idea..........
