Mine are locked in their coop and pen except for an hour before they go back in to roost, but I still have to guard them.

With my first group of girls, they were 7 weeks old when I got them, I keep them in the coop and a small enclosure for about a week, then opened the doors and let them free range on the entire property (1 1/3 acres) they all hopped into the coop at dusk.
As I incorporated more hens and roosters I kept them in a separate enclosure for several days then let them out also, they all returned to their respective houses at dusk. Never a problem.
As of this moment I haven't lost anyone to hawks, racoons etc. But they are all locked in from dusk to 6 am.

Check your population of: hawks, fox, stray dogs, feral cats, et... I let mine out an hour in the evening when the hawks do not seem to be out. Even then I have to keep an eye on them with a gun handy.
