[CHICKENS-101] Chicken involuntary head twitches?

We have a 3 month old speckled sussex who has been I'll recently. We found sleeping standing up and her eyes did not look like anyone was home. We separated her from the others and watched her. Her crop was very full and felt like a water ballon. We have been feeding her some egg and some minced kale. She is showing signs of energy and her eyes look alive again. She even tried to escape her solitary earlier. Her crop is still full but now It just feels like a crop of scrambled eggs. Our concern is the involuntary ticks. She is in a large cardboard box and sleeping in the corner. We hear the occasional tap tap as her beak thwaps the box. It is clearly not intentional and is not pecking. I see a similar pattern of water on the side of the box after she has drank. Her head just kind of goes left to right, right to left relatively quickly.

Ideas?

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Chicken Duty

The doc is right. I have a lower back injury that has plagued me for years. When I have worked too hard for the day and agitate the injury, then when I lay down to sleep, my lower back hurts and the thigh goes numb and throbs - exactly as you described. It is very hard to fall asleep this way.
Mark

Well, went out took care of my feathered critters..they sure are happy to see me :)
Somehow, somewhere, between shoveling dog jewels, chickens jewels and taking care of the exotic birds, I hurt my knee. Except it isn't my knee it is the top portion of the thigh going to the knee. It's numb but throbs.
See what happens when you have too much fun?
Called the Dr and asked the nurse if I should worry. Told me it is not my thigh or knee its my back.
I cannot believe that I have reached the age where I don't know my back from thigh.
This is a warning to all you young whippersnappers -- be aware -- this can happen to you

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: deer in my garden for chickens

I plan on venison in the fall. In a little bit I am going to check and see if they are in the garden again with my truck keys in my hand. I was so ticked that the deer ate almost all of the videla onions yesterday, that I nearly got the one sitting under the cherry tree last night. It barely stumbled sideways out of the way. There is nothing but weeds we left around the few plants in hopes of camo'ing them. :(  It was all planted on it's way to a great garden at one time. I have moved some of the plants but I doubt they will make because of being eaten down over and over.
I'm locking my chicken barns up tight at night right now too. Caught a little opossum two nights in a row, figure there are at least 16 more.

The winter my dad was in hospital, I drove Mother to see him every night--we'd come up our long driveway, and the deer would be munching the periwinkles on the bank.  Then they moved to the periwinkles right beside the house--I'd look out the window here beside the computer, and there one would be.  (Come to think, that was also the year they were herding up with my mare, who was alone for that one year...)

Umm... How do you feel about venison?  (Of course, season won't be open for a while...)  But then you could enjoy the garden sort of second hand!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] more recalls/extended

Purina aka putrina has a long history of recalls. There are many other feeds without problems and you can even make your own. Just remember that chickens are domesticated livestock that rely on us to provide all of the nutrients that they cannot get on their own. Whether you make poultry feed or buy poultry feed, I hope you do not feed an unnatural diet of only sprouted feed. Chickens are look to us to provide for all of their needs.

Food for pet rats are affected by the recall.

Three Land O'Lakes subsidiaries recalled feed products, including an expansion of the recent PMI Nutrition International recall, due to the potential for elevated vitamin D levels.
Land O'Lakes recalled several products, including WellSolve W/C for horses.
PMI initially recalled some lots of its Mazuri and LabDiet feed products earlier this month as was reported here on AnnArbor.com.
It has been expanded to include some AquaMax feed products and additional Mazuri and LabDiet products.
The company has honed in on the issue that led to the elevated vitamin D levels, but because of the regulatory process, details cannot be released.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] WOOHOO we have hatch!

Thanks, so far we are up to 10 hatched, and a lot more have small holes in the eggs. I did notice that the ones out that peeped seemed to make a few want to hatch even more and get in gear. I've taken 'em out in groups, and have tried to leave 'em in till they got to really rolling the eggs that hadn't hatched around.

Count is 3 Easter Eggers, and 7 Olive eggers, the OE's are yellows, and red tinted, and one funky looking silver black one.

You might consider keeping the newly hatched chicks in the incubator for awhile. I keep mine in for about 24 hours. Remember, they absorb the yolk and don't need to eat for 48 hours or so. Now, I don't stretch it too long, but I like to keep them in there for two reasons. One, they stay nice and warm and two, they are sideline cheerleaders for the ones still in the shell or hatching.

If the egg hatching stretches out over a few days, I take the older ones ( at least two or three at a time) and move them to the brooder.

Thanks, I had one out of the shell trying to walk around when I got up this am. It’s a black and silverish looking chick out of a brown egg, so not sure who the momma is. Maybe one of my barred rock girls. I took him out and put him in the brooder, cause he was moving the other eggs around pretty good. And my oldest just got to watch a little yellow chick hatch too. It’s not separated from the cord yet so still in there. And have about 3-4 more that have pipped. I filled the whole thing up. LOL I had 10 blue eggs and 32 brown eggs from my hens (Barred rocks, buff orpingtons, cherry eggers, RIR’s), and the rooster is an Easter Egger.

I ended up cancelling my hair cut, lol for a third time, gotta take my youngest to the doc, I think it’s his ears again.

Your little peeper will probably be hatched by tomorrow. You don’t say how many eggs are in the incubator, but if I was you…….get your hair done! Seriously, the healthy ones hatch and the ones that need help sometimes don’t make it, no matter what you do.

RE: [CHICKENS-101] Sprouting Update- atten:Jean

Thank you for caring.  :~)

Are you reading my posts?  I said from the beginning that my hens are still getting fresh fruit and veggies, still free ranging, etc.  I am simply sprouting the grain/nut/seed/legume portion of their diet rather than feeding it unsprouted.  Sprouting INCREASES the vitamins, amino acids, protein, etc. of those same grains fed unsprouted.

Will I still be tweaking things for a while?  Yes.  Our reality is, I am constantly trying to educate myself and become a better provider for ALL my animals, so 'tweaking' is an on-going process here.  :~)

I eschew commercial feeds for all my animals for the same reasons I prefer to give my family whole, organic, homemade foods rather than bleached, processed, packaged foods that have had the natural nutrients removed to prolong shelf life and then added contrived nutrients to meet MINIMUM daily requirements. . .

I have made my own sprouts and shared them with my chickens, but I really care about my chicken's nutrition and would never rely on sprouts or just one feed to supply all of the nutrients needed for a long and healthy life. Chickens are ominvores. You are still figuring out what to sprout, mean while where are your chickens getting their amino acids necessary for life, their vitamins, and trace minerals?

Feeding all sprouts is like your eating sprouts yourself everyday. The sprouts are not going to supply you with all of the nutrients you need to be healthy.
Chickens, like us, would eat a varied diet. I recommend that your chickens get their chicken feed and the sprouts. The sprout fad comes and goes and the people i know who sprout grains use them to supplement their chicken's feeding.
