Re: [CHICKENS-101] help with sores....

Sounds to me like your coop is overpopulated. I had Brahmas -- I sold
the flock last week -- and they were in perfect condition. My Speckled
Sussex are also fine, but they were young going into the winter.

[CHICKENS-101] help with sores....

As with most, we have had a horrible winter. Being a first year chicken owner, I was quite pleased that the entire flock has survived. However, I do have a few hens who seem to have a problem: they have large open sores. It seems to have happened just in the last 6 wks or so. The sores are on thier sides, maybe a few inches from thier butt. Each hen who has this, has it in nearly the same identical place. The Brahamas and Speckleds seems to be the most affected. I have been able to keep the bleeding to a minuim and the pecking within the flock does not seem to be an issue. Does anyone else have this problem? What has caused this? Is there something I should be doing to help the healing process? Or is this just an issue due to the extreme cold we have had?
THANKS!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Breeding

I really avoid referring to bantam sized breeds as "Ban ties" despite the common use of the word. It gives the impression that bantam is a BREED, rather a SIZE.
Lots of people refer to "Banties being mean" etc.
I have had bantam Cochin, Rhode Island Reds, Modern Game and Old English Game and Polish. The absolute worst were the RIR roosters. MEAN !  My MG and OEG roosters have been gentle and very friendly. My bantam Cochin hens were plump, sweet and gentle and the roosters varied in temperament.
The OEG are wonderful mothers. We had a clutch of 12 hatched by a tiny little Red Pyle hen and she was fiercely protective. She did this all on her own in the corner of a goat jug in the barn.  My husband learned to steer clear of her when she was in her "Mama mode".
They are dependable layers but the eggs are very small, of course. The Cochin eggs are small and round like little ping pong balls.
I have sold their eggs for $1 or $2 per dozen, unless they were for hatching and then $6 per dozen. These days I give them with the purchase of a dozen large eggs.
They make adorable Easter eggs and we also use them for devilled eggs. The perfect size bite.
Unless they are show quality, making a profit with them was difficult.
I have them on our farm now for entertainment, more than anything else. Especially the Polish. Omg, they are funny!

[CHICKENS-101] poultry processing

This plant is clean, kills humanely, and works with you and your work schedule.  I have been there when I had too many turkeys and chickens to process myself, the weather was too cold and or hot for me, and school was in. There are times when I cannot do it myself. I watched to make sure that my poultry was treated well and killed humanely.  They use vacuum bags to freeze/cool your poultry for you.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Experience with capons

Oops, I meant to write you have to get all of testes while avoiding the kidneys.  If you have butchered chickens recently, seen testes along the curve of the back, then think of them being half the size of a pea....

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Breeding

Bantam Plymouth rock  in any color should be a popular chicken.  I don't know about the partridge, but my standard whites are intelligent, gentle, and great layers. The barred I have had in the past lived to 13 and 16, still laid, and trained all of my silkies for me.  Intelligent, gentle birds.  I would not order hatchery, I would get them from a breeder who breeds for egg laying ability along with good dispositions.

Alright, thanks. I'm planning on breeding Partridge Plymouth Rock Bantams (that's a mouthful, I know), just to get the hang of it. I then want to breed Golden Sebrights.
