The clear coat would have to be food safe; easier to wear washable, thin rubber coated, garden gloves and safer for my birds too.

If you suspect a possible metal allergy – wearing gloves (to keep from "allergically" touching it), clean the metal object up very well then spray with 2 coats of clear acrylic spray paint. Let "bake" dry in the sun for a couple hours.
Since this has to do chickens as well, a clear coating like that won't get their attention to fear their pecking on or anything either.
