Susan, sometimes the chickens just like to snuggle in the hay or dirt. Mine do that and they are only 14 months. Too young yet to lay eggs.

I keep doing that and not a one does that yet. This eve saw three indentations on the coop floor, no eggs, some feathers in one. I'm wondering if older hen that laid and stopped is doing this, her favorite spot is still indented though.
