I had a rather violent incident with two of mine this morning. One of the barred rocks chased the RI red out of the coop and around the bushes, both of them squawking at the tops of their lungs. Apparently the rock was intent on keeping the red out of the nest boxes--ANY nest box. Maybe the red stuck her head through the curtain while the rock was there. Anyway, I finally had to throw the rock out of the fenced yard so the near-desperate red could go in to lay. Once things quieted down, I let the rock back in--by then *she* was sort of hopping from one leg to the other, too (kind of like a little kid doing what we used to call "the pee-pee dance!")
The red does seem to be bottom of the pecking order, but she's usually quick to move out of the others' way. She certainly looks healthy and shiny (although she's the one who yells "She's come to kill us!" when I come in the coop sometimes...)
