I have cedar posts and support beams in the inside of my pens. You can run beams all the way across or make wide topped T cedar post supports.  It is well worth it too, not to have the worry.

They have a coop and the run is fenced in, the run is 40x40 fenced in, the raccoons climb it. A covered run? How would we cover such a big space?
