I really avoid referring to bantam sized breeds as "Ban ties" despite the common use of the word. It gives the impression that bantam is a BREED, rather a SIZE.
Lots of people refer to "Banties being mean" etc.
I have had bantam Cochin, Rhode Island Reds, Modern Game and Old English Game and Polish. The absolute worst were the RIR roosters. MEAN ! My MG and OEG roosters have been gentle and very friendly. My bantam Cochin hens were plump, sweet and gentle and the roosters varied in temperament.
The OEG are wonderful mothers. We had a clutch of 12 hatched by a tiny little Red Pyle hen and she was fiercely protective. She did this all on her own in the corner of a goat jug in the barn. My husband learned to steer clear of her when she was in her "Mama mode".
They are dependable layers but the eggs are very small, of course. The Cochin eggs are small and round like little ping pong balls.
I have sold their eggs for $1 or $2 per dozen, unless they were for hatching and then $6 per dozen. These days I give them with the purchase of a dozen large eggs.
They make adorable Easter eggs and we also use them for devilled eggs. The perfect size bite.
Unless they are show quality, making a profit with them was difficult.
I have them on our farm now for entertainment, more than anything else. Especially the Polish. Omg, they are funny!
