Re: [CHICKENS-101] Grass clippings

< lot more herbicides into their lawn than you realize...including the
sprays>>

It's even in some of the fertilizers. That's exactly why I decided NOT to ask around for any grass clippings, even if people were to tell me their lawn was "non-toxic." My own lawn--well, it's not had anything but maybe a little composted manure in the 57 years we've been here!

Oh, and thinking of composted manure--there's even been a problem with that in some areas. Apparently there's a broadleaf herbicide (I think called "Graze-On"?) intended to be applied to pastures, and which is *extremely* persistent--no one seems to have any idea how long it lasts. What generally happens is that someone gets a nice load of composted cow manure, applies it to their vegetable garden or trees, and the plants all begin to die. The herbicide is consumed by the cattle as they graze, is passed along in the manure, is composted, and still has plenty of killing capability--and if you've been unlucky enough to have tilled it into your garden, your garden will be useless for anything but grass for who knows how long. Apparently there is a sentence in fine print, buried somewhere in the herbicide directions, that warns about its persistence. If you google "killer compost" you'll find quite a few stories, I think. (I'm lucky enough to have my
own nice big safe manure heap...)
