Boy, that's a tough one! I have seen video of a bear (in Yosemite, I think) ripping the trunk and doors off a car to get at food inside. They are crazy strong, so if they want in your coop, they are getting in. However, this was a bear that had been fed by humans and was completely unafraid of them. Most bears are naturally wary of humans. Be sure to keep anything edible around your property cleaned up and locked away. If you can invest in a bear box (bear-proof container) to keep chicken feed in, I would do so. The same for your garbage. Keep a big metal pan or garbage can lid and a hammer handy and if you see that bear, bang on that thing and shout as loud as you can! They will usually run from loud noises.
How distressing that you're not allowed to defend your dogs or chickens from marauding wildlife. In most states you can. Or at the very least, a bear that raided chicken coops or killed pet dogs would be taken care of by the Game and Fish as a danger to humans, and either killed or relocated.

Hello everyone,
My hens & roo are getting big! Hoping the girls will start laying by mid June- early July.
As some of the New England area members may know, we have an odd tourist this year. A 2 year old Black Bear male/boar, has decided to visit. My local ACO told me a few chickens in the next town over became bear chow. Ive got, what I think is a sturdy coop, that's inside a fenced in yard,( half 6x8 spruce, half chain link),& two very alert dogs. The ACO told me that unless the bear tries to kill my wife or myself, I'm not allowed to defend my birds or dogs. Any " bear repellent" ideas?
