Re: [CHICKENS-101] Winterized Coop

When we built our coop we stood 2X4s on their sides (the 4" side) front and back so the roof sits 4 inches off the front and back walls.  The side walls were built flush with the roof. That give good air flow that doesn't blow onto the chickens. A couple of months later we tacked chicken wire over the opening when we found a squirrel crawling into the coop through the opening.
The roof has an overhang front and back so no rain or snow blows in. We built our coop 10 years ago and it is still fine - no rot at all and we never get condensation building up in the winter when the birds are confined.

Hope this explanation makes sense.
Debbie

I have to admit that "ventilation with no drafts" is something I am pretty darn confused about too.
