RE: [CHICKENS-101] New LGD killed my guinea

I can relate to how you must be feeling about this.  My Anatolians are chicken killers and my female killed nine of my Modern Game chickens last year.  The male has killed several and both are now banished to the front pasture with the alpacas.

My Pyr is our poultry guardian and the most we have had to do is tell her NO to chasing or mouthing.  We did find her one day with a hen in her mouth, but she didn’t hurt anything but it’s dignity.  I still read her the riot act and told her she was not to put her mouth on my chickens.  It may seem odd, but I do talk to them as if they understand and I am betting they understand more than we think they do.

I have found the Pyrs to be very soft when it comes to correction, whereas the Anatolians seem to require a two by four. (haven’t done it, so don’t call PETA or AC on me)

I think the leash walking and reminding them the chickens are yours is a good thing.  I hope you are able to break him of it.

We have also lost guineas to our dogs.  The dumb things panic and forget they can fly!

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] New LGD killed my guinea

Our new LGD killed my guinea yesterday. He is 2yrs. old, so still young. He has been fine with my goats but not poultry. He is now being kept in a pen. He was taken on a walk on leash around the farm this morning & he lunged for a rooster. I pulled on the collar *hard* and yelled NO. I figured me & hubby would do this for a while and see if we can make him understand the poultry are off his dinner menu. I'm considering a shock collar too (though not sure what brand to get). Any other ideas? Training books, videos? I would really like for him to work out. Thanks.
