Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Bantam Cochins

Thanks, that's really nice of you. I did locate 2 started pullets. Buff and don't know if they are standard or bantam. I'll have them Tues. Really happy about that.

My dog's are on raccoon patrol. Went out last night for our walk and my big girl (12 years old Rott x Lab) went ballistic because two young, but BIG raccoons were fighting and growling and being really vicious. My girls never go into the street, but Founder took off after these two with "Extreme Prejudice" as they say in the military and I was very worried she would end up with her face torn off. Thankfully, because she's well trained, I called her back and she came. I put the lead on her because she wanted to go back after them. This is THE most mellow dog you ever want to meet, except when it comes to varmints. She knows what foxes, raccoon and skunks are, so she really hates them and will take them down, even at 12. Thankfully, she is in excellent health with only a touch of arthritis in one front leg. But, at that, she still amazed me at how fast she was on these critters. She knows her job well. Hopefully, they will remember there is a dog here and won't come back.

This city (Los Angeles) is really screwed up. They consider raccoons protected. At home in Idaho, I'd just shoot them if they tried to get into my chicken house. But here, they think the people moved into their territory. My father has owned this house for close to 60 years and I know for a fact, there have never been raccoons here until now. I think with more people having backyard chickens, it has brought in the raccoons and opossums from the hills.

My hens get locked up at night, but with these buggers so close, I'll have to put them up right ask dusk.

Hey, KC~ I'm up here in Atascadero, about 4 hours North of you. Our local feed store, Atascadero Hay and Feed, recently got a TON of chicks from Ideal hatchery. Among them were Bantam Cohins. I almost got some since those have to be the cutest chickens on earth (aside from Modern Games, of course!) They will be getting more chicks sometime in April. The dummies at the desk don't know what kind of chicks they will be getting, but here's the number: (805) 461-6411 and if you can speak to the owner, Kevin, he will know. He is a great guy and will even special order for you.

Hope this helps~
