Re: [CHICKENS-101] Random Question

I mix some of their organic crumbles, say 5 lbs at a time, with equal amounts of 3 way scratch grains and about 1/2 lb. of the minerals with oyster shell. I use a big scoop to blend/mix it all together. At home on my farm, I use a big 33 gal. trash can on wheels and dump in a whole bag of feed, a whole bag if scratch grains and about 5 lb. of the minerals. I don't weigh it out, just use the scoop. I like the trash barrel because it has a top that locks on and nothing gets in. I bought a big Sterelite (Spelling?) plastic box that I keep on a flat cart to mix their food in while I'm here. Don't need to mix that much at one time for just a few chickens.

I know people say not to mix their grains with their feed and minerals should be fed separately, but they eat it all up together. When I go out to feed, I put a little extra gain on the ground by the roses for a treat. They eat that up too and still eat their food. Sometimes when the crumbles aren't good crumbles and the food is more like mash, they only eat the grain and minerals. Otherwise, they eat everything. Of course, the doves and squirrels also come down and eat the grains on the ground. The doves line up on the wires just waiting for me to come out. I swear we have the fattest doves around and they produce lots of babies each year. They also drink out of the water fonts, so they are healthy too (LOL). A neighbor wanted to know what was going on in our yard because the doves were always on the wires over the yard.

Getting some Yard and Kennel fencing at Home Depot tomorrow to put around the little plot of lawn behind the chicken house for the babies until they know where they live. I'll put them in the chicken house at night. I have shade cloth to cover half the pen with. They should do just fine. I'm so excited, can't wait till Tues.

How do you know how much to mix of each with their feed?
