[CHICKENS-101] Instinctive Fear Response in Chicks

 

I have my new 16-day old chicks in my office--I'll be moving them out shortly.

I've noticed they absolutely freak at some of the computer sounds. I play an on-line Sudoku that has a little computer jingle when you finish the puzzle. The chicks just panic if I've forgotten to turn off the sound to my computer. It must have the same frequency for some natural predator (maybe a hawk). It isn't the volume, it's the frequency that bothers them. Obviously, I try keep the sound turned off, but sometimes I forget.

I'm still enjoying my little chicks. The next brooder I make will have clear acrylic sides so I can get a better view of them. They really are adorable.
