I've raised chickens for decades and as long as you keep mites and lice off
them, give them good vitamins and feed, along with minerals, they stay
pretty healthy. Through the years, due to too much inbreeding, the Rhode
Island Reds have developed a crop disease that is usually incurable. Other
than some malformations at hatching time, you really don't have to worry
much. Just make sure they are locked up at night to keep them safe from
predators.
I've had chickens live for 10 years and some not so long.
