Re: [CHICKENS-101] Waterer help

<<I was wondering if anyone on here has any type of gravity fed self waterer. I was thinking of something that could be tied into a rain barrel of sorts and fed through a hose that would go into the top (maybe) of one of the plastic waterers so that as the chickens drink the water, the water would replenish from the hose to keep the water jug filled. That's probably not very clear. Any one get it and have suggestions?>>

I believe that's more or less what Joel Salatin suggests in his book, Pastured Poultry Profit$.  Not sure what he uses as a gravity-feed hanging waterer, but it's tied in to a 5-gallon bucket with tubing.  (Of course this does not work when the temps go below freezing.)

Another option would be to drill some holes in the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket and install nipple waterers. Then the whole bucket could be hung up for access.  The water stays clean if you have a lid on the bucket--if you put a splash of cider vinegar in, it shouldn't get slimy (although I still wouldn't want to leave it more than a few days without replacing the water).  I located a package of nipples in eBay at a good price, and they were relatively easy to install--all I needed extra was some silicon caulking.  Too bad the chickens never worked it out...
