Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Bunch of Broody Hen Questions

LOL!  Actually I'd like to watch the bathing of broodys, the entertainment value would be price less! Any shampoo or mild gentle dish soap- no antibacterial will do.  Remember never to use heat when blow drying a chicken.  They dry almost as fast on their own in warm weather.  It is amazing how long it takes to blow dry a chicken.   I'd be worried about leaving the eggs unattended long enough to bath the broody hens.

Hi back at you WCL:
I would definitely do something to keep the nest warm if it's not already too late. The best time to candle is around 10 day. Much sooner and you could miss the development. After 25 days you could mistake a chick for a bad egg. It takes a practiced eye. A hen may leave her clutch for a while and return without problems. Without knowing what stage the embryos are at it's difficult to make a guess about their health.
Leave the eggs alone but you could give the hen a bath. This would naturally be met with a lot of screaming and death threats. Any mild dish soap will do(now I will get poison pen e-mails). This should be accompanied by a Blow-dry and maybe a manicure. Moma hens can be very aggressive. RIRs are particularly combative. Buff Orps not so much. They may cooperate in brooding or they may try to steal each other's chicks
