Re: [CHICKENS-101] This'n that

Thank you George. I think you covered the subjects well, like a good mini skirt.
Thank you for the heads up. I wasn't thinking about "those people". I was just thinking of how to word it and not be overly offensive to the more sensitive in the group. The fact of the matter is, there is chicken in the store, we raise chickens, it's nice to know that your eggs come from healthy hens, and that your meat was treated well and processed humanely. It sucks that we have to be so careful about what's said not to offend the anti animal police.
Guess I better stop now. Haha. Have a great day. I miss your witty banter on here when you don't post for a while.

Ol' George here. Although I am not as active as I once was I'm still around. Through the years the group has shifted focus a bit as people come and go for one reason or another. Some are missed… The main strength has always been answering the question "WHAT DO I DO NOW?". I have always advised potential chickeneers to get some kind of a book. This not only gives you some information but leads you to the questions you need answered by the group. However, this may not always be easy to do. So we are here, "The Enablers." The "Files", "Links", "database" and even the "Photo" sections available on the menu have a lot of information from past and present members.
As the title page states, the group is for everyone so opinions may vary. Please recognize that others have a right to a different point of view. Try to be nice even if you've got your underwear on backward.
Ron asked about registered chickens. Not only are they registered they are patented with the Government. When you get by "Breeds" there are "Strains". Some hatcheries know their chickens ancestry all the way back to the original chicken. "Show people" get all wrapped up in this.
Melanie asked about keeping chicks warm. `A chicks best friend is a thermometer `, it's that important. Next is draughts. Ignoring these things can be deadly. The back porch is generally not a good idea.
Someone asked if Store Bought chicks were a good as hatchery chicks. And where do you think the store gets their chicks? The good side of chicks at the store is that they are still alive and maybe a couple days old. The first 10 days are critical and store chicks have passed the worst of it. The bad side is you have to take the store clerks word as to what they are. This can led to surprises.
Why do all the hens use the same nest? I went out are asked the girls about this and a got a lot of answers that didn't make a whole lot of sense. Did you know four hens can fit into a 12" square nest?
Alan, Marla be careful what you say. PETA is out there and they are watching. They can send the vegetable squad out to get you.
