I buy parakeet grit for my chicks like Laura does because they do not need very much, do not need it very often, and they are eating chick food/mash. Once my chicks are old enough to go outside, they find their own grit. Once a chicken goes outside on a regular basis, grit is not needed. I offer grit in a dish, separate from oyster shell, in my barns, because not of all my silkies like to go outside. Some of my silkies prefer bedding over dirt, sunshine thru their doorways and windows, and treats brought to them over grass and weeds.
