Marla, As a general rule, yes silkies need more nutrition than other chickens. They tend to be more sensitive to feed with low b complex, e, and minerals including trace. (Silkies without enough e, or b complex, and/or selenium will head tuck from brain insult from lack of nutrients.) The bit of extra protein is for down growth and egg production. I use a various of feed strategies: wheat, alfalfa, homemade feeds with specific supplements, organic fish meal, red cell, and others, but not all of them at the same time. Your little silkie is in with an egg layer group that as a flock will protect and watch out for her. She can get out and get of all of the bugs and plants she needs.
I feed for: increased life expectancy, down growth maximized at a young age, egg laying optimized, and healthy chicks because mine never stop hiding eggs and popping up with chicks. I like to hatch quite a few silkies and I have to find good homes for the extras. The cuter and prettier they are, the more they cost people, and the better chance of my sold silkies getting a good home.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Silkie questions
Cathryn you say silkies need higher levels of different minerals and protein? What all do they need extra? Mine is on same stuff as everyone else here and laying great. She may be an exception.
Do silkie eggs typically have more bloom than other breeds? Dust bunny has so much bloom on her eggs they almost feel like duck eggs. They make the other bantam eggs look dull and boring.
