I have never had a mean one, at least none of mine that I raised. I have about 40 roosters right now of many breeds. The only mean ones of my breeds were ones I got back from someone else that raised them from chicks. I believe that it has to do with how they were raised. The woman that returned several of my mean roos to me were from a very calm bantam breed. I was shocked at how mean they were and I asked her what she did and she was afraid of them the very first time they appeared bold and she would pull back and try to be far away from them when she fed them. It took me quite a while to get them back like the other ones I had. These never became as calm like their brothers as they feared me more instead of being as happy to see me bring them treats.
I am never afraid of my roos and I have never had any become mean (mean to other roos, yes). I move them from pen to pend at different times and just grab them. I walk into a pen of 15 some times and none have ever gone after me. I have always hoped that one would that I had raised to see how long it would take to fix him, but it has never happened. I walk into their pens and pay them no mind, but I try not to step on them.
Now I will man handle them if they start picking on other roos too much.
