Yes you did miss out. Amazon has lots of free ebooks all the time. A kindle is nice and I love mine but I also read the books with a free app on my smartphone. I also downloaded the free kindle reader to my computer. I can read any of the books on any of the 3.
Some books are free only for a day or 2 at a time.
Some people gather a list of free books and shares them with other people, or posts a list on their blog.
I have about a thousand books on my kindle and most of those are free. Some fiction but most are homesteading type books.
