Judy, It depends on the cats too not just the chickens. Chickens are domesticated farm animals that need protection from predators. When we get our chickens we take on that responsibility; chickens are no different than if we bought horses, calves, or geese, they need protection from predators that can and will hurt them.

When I lived in Tucson near the University the area was overrun with
feral cats. I had 3 chickens (Americauna mixes) that stood up to them. I
once saw a cat jump up on the fence and begin eyeing them. The 3 chickens
grouped together, put their wings out slightly, ruffled up their feathers
and began marching in unison towards the cat while making low growling
noises. The cat quickly thought better of it's plan for a chicken dinner
and left. The chickens went back to pecking and pawing. I always locked
them in their well insulated box at night so they wouldn't wake us up in the
mornings, but thinking about it now it provided good secure protection while
sleeping. They were adults, I don't know how old they need to be before
they begin to work together like that.
