Just popping in 'cause I'm curious about something with this...........did you wash the eggs so maybe take the bloom off of them causing them to be more open to bacteria's getting inside?

I ran out of egg cartons so I put eggs in a tall Rubbermaid container. They
stayed in the back of the refrigerator where it's cold. The container was
sealed. They've been there a long time. I now have more egg cartons than
I have eggs, so I decided to put these in egg cartons and use them first. I
set them in water to see if they were fresh. Two came up on end but did not
even bounce. However, I accidently broke one. It had a very weak shell.
I noticed mold on the inside of the shell. There was no bad odor. I put
this egg down the drain and cracked another just to see. It was also moldy
on the inside of the shell. Otherwise the egg looked and smelled fine. I
broke one more, and it was normal. The moldy ones had "bumpy" (not smooth)
shells. Only two had bumpy shells.
Should I toss all the eggs? I suspect it was because they were in a
container which could not breathe. I did not break any others open, and
these all lay flat in water. We have only had one power outage, and this
was just a few hours. I will not use a container like this again.
