Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Mold on eggs

From the school of hard knocks I learned that some of the eggs in a closed container, stored for several months, in the refrigerator will mold and it doesn't matter if the eggs were put in as gathered, or were rinsed (rinsing does not remove the bloom), or washed.  I store eggs in rectangular shaped containers and or clean egg cartons without sealing them in a container, a frig that has to be defrosted because eggs dry out in a frost free refrigerator.  I rinse my eggs in oxine or bleach water and drain them in a clean wire basket one layer deep. I use 1/4 cup of oxine or bleach per 5 gallons of lukewarm water for hatching and eating eggs (not quite a tablespoon per gallon). Dirty eggs are washed, cooked, and fed to my cats and dog; do not hatch from or eat eggs that get dirty.

Just popping in 'cause I'm curious about something with this...........did you wash the eggs so maybe take the bloom off of them causing them to be more open to bacteria's getting inside?

I haven't read about anything like this before.
I ran out of egg cartons so I put eggs in a tall Rubbermaid container. They
stayed in the back of the refrigerator where it's cold. The container was
sealed. They've been there a long time. I now have more egg cartons than
I have eggs, so I decided to put these in egg cartons and use them first. I
set them in water to see if they were fresh. Two came up on end but did not
even bounce. However, I accidently broke one. It had a very weak shell.
I noticed mold on the inside of the shell. There was no bad odor. I put
this egg down the drain and cracked another just to see. It was also moldy
on the inside of the shell. Otherwise the egg looked and smelled fine. I
broke one more, and it was normal. The moldy ones had "bumpy" (not smooth)
shells. Only two had bumpy shells.

Should I toss all the eggs? I suspect it was because they were in a
container which could not breathe. I did not break any others open, and
these all lay flat in water. We have only had one power outage, and this
was just a few hours. I will not use a container like this again.
