[CHICKENS-101] Re: skunk

Awwww, that's a sweet story! I've always thought skunks were beautiful and
interesting animals. A few years ago we were getting ready to work the deer
herd (fallow deer) which we do a night so they are not as wild and a skunk
ran to and hid under our work table and stayed there all night. We
discussed the possible ways of making it go away ("poke it with a stick", no
"YOU poke it with a stick") but couldn't come up with any good solutions.
Eventually we got busy and forgot about it. When we finished the sun was
just coming up and out came the skunk. Apparently it watched us all night
and didn't get too upset at us using the table for vaccines and wormers and
such. When things finally quieted down he (or she?) just came out and
waddled away.

For those of you who haven't read it yet this is my skunk story. A few years
ago a lady skunk took up residence under the floor of the barn. We became
quite used to each other over time. Not exactly friends but close enough to
pass each other during morning barn chores without incident. The next spring
she delivered a litter if kits, if that's what you call baby skunks. A few
weeks later she and most of the babies were gone. Don't know where they went
but she left one behind. The little one became tame. She could often be seen
digging for bugs or whatever skunks eat. We decided on a course of
non-intervention or "leave-it-alone". That fall I thought I had rats in the
chicken coop so I put out a rat size have-a-heart trap. Small one that only
opened at one end. I still don't know how the skunk got all the way in to
that trap. It was a small animal under all that fur, still it was a bit of a
squeeze. I covered the trap with a towel and took it out to the other side
of the pasture. To release it I had to hold the door open and help it back
out. At this point my dear wife stopped shouting advise and retreated to the
other side of the road. I got the skunk out of the trap, it turned and
looked at me and proceeded to head right back to the barn. The only reason I
didn't get sprayed was I think it recognized me. Eventually a handsome and
big boy skunk came by and they eloped without even saying good by. Just goes
to show, ya never know.
