grade DE is perfect. I put it in an old dish pan with some sand. Works great

I do not use DE, don't believe the dust is safe for man or animal to breathe. I would mix in sand, not use only DE. I use an organic poultry dust and dry play sand. This way I feel I know if there were any lice they'd be gotten rid of. Are your chicks in the same coop with the adult birds? If they are on the ground in their own coop I'd make them their own dust bath. I use low sturdy, cut down, boxes so I can recycle or compost the cardboard.
