SSS when necessary. I'd start digging now.

Whew! What a morning. The grandson went to let one of the dogs out around 8:30 this morning, while I was getting stuff done in the bathroom. He starts carrying on and I holler at him through the wall to see what is going on. He says "there's a bear in the yard". I high tail it out to the back door and look out, and sure enough, there is a black bear sitting in front of the Rubbermaid shed I keep all the chicken feed in. He has pulled one of the doors off the hinge. It is hanging sideways because it is still attached to the other door by the padlock. (They only keep out good guys you know. Lol) So, I call animal control and see if they can do anything about it. She said she would send an officer right out. An hour later, I call back to see if they are coming or what. The officer this time says they are in route. The bear finally finishes up all the poultry feed, the scratch, the sunflowers and anything else he could find in there, so he starts meandering away from the chicken shed and over towards the turkey pen. I grab the shotgun to make sure he doesn't do any damage, when there is a knock at the door and animal control is here. He comes in the house and over to the back door so he can see the bear. Then he asks for a couple of pots and takes them outside to bang together and scare the bear away!!!! I could have done that an hour and a half ago. So, I proceed to ask him what is legal to do if (or when) he comes back. He says that we aren't allowed to shoot it unless it is attacking. He suggested that if (or when) we see it again to bang the pots or pans and try to make it a different noise each time to harass the bear so he will go away and hopefully at some point he will decide it's not worth coming back. He also tells me it is legal to shoot the bear with a paint ball gun to scare him away. My grandson liked the idea of a black bear with purple spots. Lol. So, now we are on the bear watch. I have to break it to my daughter when she gets home tonight. She is deathly afraid of bears. My husband and grandson saw one a few months ago that was about 15 or 20 miles from us here (maybe the same one?). She was ready to move right then and there. I can only imagine how she will react to this news. Grandson thought it was interesting though. He never left the door or window watching it. We got quite a few pictures of it. Some with its nose inside the bag from the sunflowers. I thought he was beautiful. The animal control officer did say that if he continues to be a nuisance, we will have to call game and inland fisheries. They are the only ones who can legally do anything with it. AAHhhh, such is life in the country. I love the wildlife, just not that close to the house.
