Re: [CHICKENS-101] Bloody egg

thepoultrysite.com  has a section about this.  If it is not happening all of the time, I would not worry about it.

We got an egg today that was bloody. I don't mean spots but a large amount. Not sure who it is from. Should I be concerned?

[CHICKENS-101] Instinctive Fear Response in Chicks

I have my new 16-day old chicks in my office--I'll be moving them out shortly.

I've noticed they absolutely freak at some of the computer sounds. I play an on-line Sudoku that has a little computer jingle when you finish the puzzle. The chicks just panic if I've forgotten to turn off the sound to my computer. It must have the same frequency for some natural predator (maybe a hawk). It isn't the volume, it's the frequency that bothers them. Obviously, I try keep the sound turned off, but sometimes I forget.

I'm still enjoying my little chicks. The next brooder I make will have clear acrylic sides so I can get a better view of them. They really are adorable.

[CHICKENS-101] thought this was stopped

I thought the backyard blogger was stopped; ran across it today looking for an article. http://mybigchickens.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2013-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&updated-max=2014-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&max-results=50

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: moving hatch chicks from incubator

What breed is she? Eggs hatch in 21 days. If you put the chicks under her
when the eggs are due to hatch, she should accept them. I've done this with
a few chickens. I find it's best if you put them under her during the night
when she is sleeping. That way if she is a more skittish hen, she will be
more relaxed and you have a better chance of her taking them.

Once they are dry, I put them under the light in the brooder box.

Depends on the hen. Some will kill the chicks and others will keep them.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] moving hatch chicks from incubator

I like to keep my chicks in for about 24 hours.  At the very least, until they are dry and fluffy.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Oyster shell

Dawn,  Your chickens need both grit and oyster shell.  They are used for different purposes by your chicken's bodies.

We provide Oyster shell in a hanging pet feeder on the wall of our chicken coop all year round to our layers. They can eat what they want when they want. We just keep the feeder with some in it. It seems to work great.
This year with our pullets we put grit into the hanging feeder for them until they started laying then we switched it to oyster shell.

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Noooooooooooooo!!!! My city doesn't allow chickens. :-(

I have 2 coops of "stealth chickens" on my pool deck under to overhand of the roof. I bring the roosters into the laundryroom at night and don't let them back out until everybody is up and about.
