[CHICKENS-101] Candling chicken eggs

I have a small incubator that I used for several years in the classroom with no problems. I got it out about 10 days ago and set it up for my grandkids. Problem: I have at least 1 rotten egg (can smell it!) and I can't figure out which one(s) it is. I've tossed the ones I knew were not good, but there must be at least one more in there creating the stink. Is there a file or website with good candling photos the kids and I can review before we try candling them again? I hate to give up and toss the whole project.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Storms

Laura, I am so sorry Splashie died in the storm. You could see if your roosters will take on the all of the chicks and finish raising them up. Put them all in at night around the two roosters in the dark, and check them in the morning. If you need more nn silkies I have a blue, gray, and a partridge with penciling 2.5 months old.

OMG, I can't believe that storm last night.  It seemed to have come from nowhere and I was expecting to see a witch bicycling by the window!  Our deck furniture went flying, we lost power until 5am and the roof on two of the coops flew off!  Sadly, one of the coops had my Splashie in it and she was dead this morning.  I think the roof may have crushed her before being lifted……not sure, but she is gone.

Everyone else seems no worse for wear and we repaired the rooftops, today.  Also put electrolytes in everyone's water and made sure fans were running and shade was available to all.

I have some Silkies chicks that are almost four months old.  I am selling some but keeping some and want to integrate them in with Chi chi  (Splashie's BFF)  and the two boys, Barty and Ichibod.  So, my thought is to gradually add hens to the coop, one at a time in the evening when it is dark and sleepy time.  I plan to keep a black hen, blue hen, buff hen.  The little cockerels are going to be kept separate and I don't want to add them to this mix- I think Barty and Icky will hurt them.  Any thoughts?

Well the storms last night roared though here in central Virginia . We were just getting ready for bed when they hit. I was sitting on the bed and felt the house shake. My first thought was" great an earthquake on top of the storm". Lol Hubby and I went out to check and found it was a pine tree that had come down and the top tip of it hit the porch on our end of the house. No damage to the house, but it came down straight across our chicken tractor with the babies in it. Fortunately it only came down on the run and they were closed in the coop for the night. We had to get up first thing this morning and get the tree off the run and do a quick rigging job to get it to a point where we could let the babies out. Got that taken care of and cut up the rest of the tree. Then went out front where a tree had started to come down and got hung up on the tree beside it. Hubby got it pulled down into the woods. We have leaf litter and debris all over the yard, but no damage to life or property other than the chicken run. Oh yeah, power was out from 10:00 till 6 this morning.

Our heat has been nothing like what some of you are getting... But what you've all posted reminded me of my dad's descriptions of India (where he was stationed during the War).  And in turn I used to recite Kipling's "Paggett, M.P." for him (about a politician who came to India during the cool months, and sneered about the "Asian solar myth"--until someone got him to agree to stay longer...)  If anyone wants to read it, here's a link:

Thanks for all the tips for the comfort of the hens!

[CHICKENS-101] Mugged by chickens!

So.  I've been planning from Day One of getting these chicks, to get them used to coming to the call of "Chick-chick!" so I can get them into the coop at night once they free-range.  They liked their oatmeal when thery were little, so that got them started.  I've used a few dried meal-worms, too.

Now the Japanese beetles have come out.  Every time I head out to the garden or blackberry patch, I bring a cup with a little water in the bottom, and pick beetles into the cup.  This year, when I come back, the beetles go to the hens.  It's been only 3, maybe 4 days now that I've done this.

I think it's gone beyond "chick-chick."  I have to warn you--if I don't post for a few days, someone may want to check on me.  Those chicks will hear me coming, with the cupful of scrabbling little beetle legs, and they'll burst open the door of the coop, knock me down, and run me over to get those beetles!

Probably the same chances we had a few years back... Big thunderstorm and wind, half of a very old maple tree came down, and all the hay machinery (side-delivery rake, cutter/conditioner, and tedder) was right there--but every major branch came down either side of every piece.

Yeah, that was a pretty amazing storm.  not alot of rain, just incredible winds.
I am so lucky.  we had a huge oak tree go down but it went the exact right way to not hit our house, cars, and fence.
and that was only about a 10 degree window.  what are the chances! of that!!???!!!

RE: [CHICKENS-101] sick chicken

>The only other antibiotic I have is tetra something that comes in a green bag and is a bright yellow powder

that would be a good choice. And as Cathryn mentioned, keep her seperate that will also solve the problem of the other ones getting a treatment which they don't.  I usually use antibiotics that come in pill form, it's easier to dose, I just wrap it into a small piece of soft bread and stick it far back into their mouth, that way I know they have the full dose and don't need to worry about mixing in into water and hoping they will drink enough to get enough of the medicinge. Pigeon supply outlets usually have pills and powders of various antibiotics and also all the regular places have fish antibiotics, those usually are capsules, so have to mix the powder from the capsule like Cathryn does with the feed "pills"
If you have injectable Tylan for your goats, I have used that for chickens and given it orally, some of mine will take it if I give them a few small pieces of bread and drizzle the Tylan on it, but it's very bitter, so for some I just drizzle it on bread and let it sit and dry out a bit for half hour then roll into balls and put those in their mouth.

She needs another round of treatment for 7 days. I'd also give her a hospital cage in air conditioned mud room. Boxes with shredded paper and oven racks on the top work perfect if you not have a hospital set up. You may have to hand feed her. Mix yogurt into a small container of feed until it has the consistency that you can small balls out of it.

Wendy, What state do you live in? Members who live in the same state will have knowledge about the worms in your area. Since you treated her for round worms, she responded to cocci treatment, I'd do it again; measure carefully. Sulmet is very hard on kidneys.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Rooster wounding hens when mating

Lin, Harvey Ussery is right that roosters who dance for their hens have happier hens. Not only do they dance for their hens but they help raise chicks, watch out for the chicks, tell their hens of good places where to lay their eggs, and even help sit on the eggs. My blue silkie cockerel has a good 8-9, 1-2 month old chicks he is raising on his own. I've watched my silkie roosters make a hollow in clean pine bedding, call to his hens, make broody noises and put beddin on his back like he is broody. After his hens lay their eggs in the nest he made, he sits with them and stands guard over them. I am keeping my white frizzled cockerel because he goes one step farther and takes treats to his broodys and keeps a concerned eye on them.  These behaviors are not limited to silkies. My white rock rooster is just as caring and gentle to his hens and pullets as my silkie roosters are to theirs. A good rooster/cockerel is worth his weight in gold.

I read in Harvey Ussery's book THE SMALL SCALE POULTRY FLOCK that
chickens are most likely to be wounded during mating by a rooster who
lacks the ancestral knowledge of courting. He won't keep a rooster who
doesn't "dance" for his ladies. Roosters who court their mates with
dances are accepted by the hens, who are prepared for what our
grandfathers called "treading." Without the rooster's dance, the rooster
is effectively raping the hens, who have had no time to prepare
themselves for the act, and thus, they are injured. Mr Ussery states
that since he only allows roosters who dance, he has not had any injured
hens.

Does that match the experience of others? I don't own a rooster, so I
can't speak from experience.
