Rhonda, Make sure your barley is hulled or you'll loose hens for sure. Wheat, millet, or oats would be a better choice.

As Cathryn noted, buying cabbage(s) for more than a few chickens is out of the question. Mine only get it occasionally, on really bad days. I raised a few extra cabbages this year, although this last one I did have to buy. Next year, I'm going to try raising a lot more and see how they keep in the cellar. The biddies won't mind if the outside leaves are a bit limp!
Actually, once the garden was largely done for the year, I also was able to keep giving the chickens all the Brussels sprouts leaves and broccoli leaves until the garden was stripped--I think they were still getting them up through the end of November!
I may also see if I can ask for pumpkins on our local Freecycle, once Hallowe'en is done. (A friend gave me several after Thanksgiving--I put up several tasty jars of pickled pumpkin and toasted seeds, while the chickens cleaned up the peelings and soft spots.) Also plan to try sprouting some barley on a regular basis for the chickens, next winter--maybe this year, if i can get the seed in time.
