Just a comment on wheat... Even before attempts to create what we would call GMO wheat (so far not officially approved or released, but knowing our industry-loving government, it'll happen) there were changes made to wheat in North America. I'd have to look it up, but I seem to remember it was in the late 1950s or 1960s--apparently something like irradiation of wheat seeds, which did in some way alter the genetic material, to "improve" it (shorter straw, faster maturing, who knows what).

Here's the interesting part. That's precisely when widespread gluten intolerance began to show up. Something was changed in the wheat that made it a problem for many people. And another note--there have been reports from a small number of gluten-intolerant individuals that they took the known risk of trying artisan breads while in Europe--and to their surprise, EUROPEAN wheat did not seem to affect them. The situation needs more study and reporting, but the implication is that most European wheat is still the normal kind that most humans have tolerated (and thrived on) for eons, while American wheat has in some way been altered such that it creates gluten intolerance unknown before the mid-1900s changes in wheat.

No idea what difference (if any) it makes for chickens. I don't think too many of us are planning European vacations for our biddies...
