You know, I've read that too. But I grow head lettuce in my garden, it's just a regular lettuce that the leaves clump together in the middle to form a head, sort of like cabbage does. I don't see how it can be that much different. And the animals eat it just as fast as any other lettuce. It seems like they wouldn't touch it if it had no food value at all.

I hope.it was romaine or any other than iceberg. Iceberg has zero nutritional value. ( although they do love it)
