Re: [CHICKENS-101] Meanest breed?

Most roosters, if they are worth their salt, will protect the hens and their chicks. If you are using banty hens, please don't get standard size roosters!  OMG, they will grind those little hens into the ground trying to mate with them.
If you are concerned about predators....well alot of people say bantys "attract' hawks and the such because the are so little and "easy".  Maybe you should start with bigger chickens....I like Buff Orpingtons...they aren't known for being "mean", but I have seen some grand, gentle old roosters who really looked after their flock.  If you try to find "mean" roosters, they will be "mean" to you too!

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Meanest breed?

HI,
I have a project that I'm starting and I was wondering what you guys think the meanest chicken breed is as far as roosters go. I'm raising quail for my grandpa to let go on his property and I'm going to use bantam cochins as my broody hens and mothers, but I was looking for a breed of chicken that is mean/smart to add to the flock so they will help to protect the hens while the are sitting on their clutches of quail eggs.
