Re: [CHICKENS-101] Covered perches?

wide and flat for the whole foot to not have to grip is what I have been
told. Especially for heavy birds.... then they can hunker down and
relax. About four to six inches wide so they can still poo overboard. LOL.

I am even considering poop hammocks .... dont laugh I have seen pix and
they seem to be quite practical. hang a tarp from two closet rods like
a saggy stretcher. The poo collects and dries and can be transported
out easily with rods as handles. pour the poo in the compost pile and
if necessary squirt down the tarp with a blast of water. I watched it
work in my own coop with the little ones when I had a tarp just laying
between two pvc pipes.... for protection from some rain. they roosted
on top and all the poo migrated to the middle as it dried out.

I had one in their coop from previous use as a tack room ...is there any reason that I shouldn't add a few more? They are a bugger to clean but they seem to like to hunker down instead of perch like the rest. Also, I have a few that still prefer to cuddle together on the ground...is this normal in younger chickens, or does this indicate a problem with the perching??? I.E. - not enough, or not the right type??? I really want my girls to be comfortable and am worried that they aren't.:(
