Couldn't I use a dog crate and utilize your idea as to removing the poo and shredding the paper?

Ro, It's easier to buy a cross cut shredder, free boxes from the grocery, and use an oven rack for a cover.  A slit with a knife on the side of the box will give you a place to hang the feed and water cups.  You can add shredded paper as needed.  About day 5 take the dishes out, use a knife to cut the corners to the shredded paper bedding, fold over the sides, slide a garbage over it, take it out to the garden or compost heap to make great mulch.  It's quick, easy, and cheap.  I get boxes ahead, put shredded paper in them, stack them in the corner of the mudroom.  It's easy to keep my mud room chickens clean this way.  If you put a garbage bag under the bedding, you can grab the corners of the bag every other day, dump the bedding, put the bag down and put more in more shredded paper.  Sounds like a lot of work but it's not, is quick,  and it's easier than cleaning a cage.
