Nina, What a sweet story! I don't blame your little hen throwing such a fuss for her chicks. She was a smart cookie to have her fussing tantrum in front of you so she could get her chicks back.
Giving broody hens chicks out of the incubator is a great way to keep broody hens happy. I have large 6 tubs of chicks, about 25+ chicks in each tub now. (I was going to limit each tub to 15-16, but chicks were called out early by other chicks hatching.) I am going to sneak out in the dark, take my broody silkie's eggs, and put chicks under them. I'd guess I have approx 40+ broodies to divide them up between. I am hoping the horrible heart burn that is plaguing me goes away soon. I wanted to start getting chicks out tonight. My roosters and hens will be ecstatic to have more chicks.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Little White hen in the corner
I have a tiny white hen of unknown parentage, who has tried all summer to hatch chicks. Night before last I went over to the ancient mobile home I use for my Silkies and babies. I saw that plump Mama Silkie had usurped the nest. I just shrugged, so Silkie. I went on and fed all the others, but when I noticed that little White Hen was giving Silkie Mama a thorough beaking, with accompanying shrieks. OK, back off you never hatch anything, but I'll look. Yup, nest full of bits, and Mama Silkie wanted them a lot. I grabbed the peeps and the white hen, family is now doing fine. Mama Silkie is still sitting in the corner. She get whatever comes out of the incubator next.
