Rick ... Gina is right as far as a hen feeding chicks .... not like a bird feeds hatchlings / nestlings . Now if your hen and chicks are free range then yes she will take her chicks to where food is.... scratch and  call them like a roo does for his hens.  I know this since I have watched hens with chicks exhibit this behavior .The last hen that raised chicks raised them without the aid of any feed and did quite well.    Now if they are cooped or kept in a restricted area then yes you need to feed them chick starter.

We JUST had a Brahma hen brood and hatch some chicks yesterday. Do we need to get them starter chick food? OR will the mother hen take care of them?
