The long shreds work well too.  The longer shreds just have to be changed a bit more often because they pack down fast.  People bring me their cross cut paper from home, no staples; makes them feel green and it helps me out.  The box tops are a great idea!!!  How did you make your feeder?  They sound like the size of feeders I need for my brooders.

A produce guy gave me a thousand box tops that are flat I an use them for the bottom, I have a shredder but not a cross cut one. It all sound doable now thanks.
I made my own chick feeder out of a Folgers container and a pie pan, worked great it's an auto feed.
