Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Do any of you let your hens roost outside in the trees?/Cathryn

Here is a picture of it, but I am afraid you can't see so well. But you can see that the Folgers container is upright.
I used to have a full set of pics that I sent another forum,.'

This is a picture of my babies when I first got them it was too cold to put them out all day so I put them out in the dappled sun when it started to warm up, this is the dog crate, you can't really see it but I took the bottom out so they could eat the grass.

Get a small 7"-8" cake pan, make a 1/4" hole in the center, make a hole in the center of the bottom of the Folgers container.
On the bottom side of the Folgers container make a (3) sort of v cut, it is hard to explain, picture that you want to have some food go through the container out the bottom, so it needs to be
small but not too small, I make a few holes and play with it until I get it large enough so the feed spills out enough to give them food but small enough so it does not pour out too much. You are savvy you will understand.
You run a screw up from the bottom of the pan through the container and secure it with a bolt. You will need a few washers to take the pressure off the plastic. You may have to push the screw up from the bottom so the unit sits flush with the floor..
Now fill the container with feed and let it spill out into the pan, and you are all set. It really is very easy. Don't forget to put the cover on so they don't poo in it.
It is a lot easier than it sounds. If the holes are not big enough make them bigger. You will be making them like crazy once you get the knack.
I made mini ones for my finches with used spice bottles and a small plate. works good too.
If you have any questions I am here.

The long shreds work well too. The longer shreds just have to be changed a bit more often because they pack down fast. People bring me their cross cut paper from home, no staples; makes them feel green and it helps me out. The box tops are a great idea!!! How did you make your feeder? They sound like the size of feeders I need for my brooders.
