Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Turkey shoots

Prof.  If I went to a live turkey shoot, I'd walk away with a turkey.  When I took my NRA instructor training the guys always made me go last.  When we went to the range for hand gun, the guys made me go last as usual, and after the champion marksman, Bill, shot his 2nd time.  They didn't even bother to change the targets after Bill. (Not sure why they had me go last, I out did myself on the rifle, clay pigeons, and shot gun. LOL!)  I shot thru the champion marksman bulls eyes each time, even the moving targets.  I know it sounds like I am bragging, I am not.  I can shoot and have always been able too. My father trained me and is an excellent instructor.  My hand gun training was done with a friend and his sons.  He's a retired chief master range officer for a large city police dept.  It was much fun!
I can't wait until I have my energy back so I can teach hunter safety again with the DNR.  I'd like to get back into mentoring youth at poultry shows, teaching, and helping out with a nice show silkie.  I loved helping teens and youth practice for  showman- ship, teaching how to feed silkies so they are stay in optimal health, standards, and how to groom them so they win.
Grew up with all boys and am competitive, can't help it.  I had to keep up with my brothers and cousins, be as good or better than they were to be able to tag along.

There's a difference between a hunt and a shoot. Cathryn describes a hunt and we do those too.

A shoot is a formal competition between marksmen and lots of times the turkey wins and gets to go back to the farm where it likely becomes someone's dinner anyway!

Ranges are 50 yards or more.  Rules are rifle or musket, flint or percussion (usually separate divisions), offhand only, iron sights only, 1 turn per entry fee, 1 round per turn and the turkey walks when 5 shooters in a row miss him which is a frequent occurrence.

The proceeds from the shoot usually go to some worthy cause.
