I think, Marlene, if I had a choice in the matter that is the route I would take.  My heartworm positive burro lived a long life, producing offspring, with her heartworm.

>            Heartworm treatments have improved over the years but they are still very expensive and can be fatal for many dogs.  Also, some dogs suffer permanent heart damage in the process.  Basically, it is a gradual introduction of a poison- enough to kill the hw but not enough to kill the dog…..although a surge of dead heartworms can and do kill dogs, occasionally. 
 
there is another option for heartworm positive dogs, which is just to give ivermectin. I adopted a heartworm positive dog over 15 years ago and I wouldn't put a dog through that kind of treatment again.
