Whether flat or round they should be large enough that the chicken's toes don't go beyond where the feathers can cover them or they will get cold. I've never had a problem with round roosts that are at least 2 inches in diameter.

I know my parents raised chickens with pole roosts and that is what I expected to use, but I went with the 4 inch wide boards and they work fine.

> So, my hens like sleeping in their nest box where they then poop all night. They have a roost pole but never use it. Tonight, I've tried moving them out and blocking the opening to the nest box. Boy were they pissed. Any other ideas on how to get them to roost instead? Oh, it might help to show you my coop....
