[CHICKENS-101] Re: Was Rats, Now Rat Poison

You can buy a bait box that is a metal container to put the rat poison in which has a hole rats or mice can go into, but other critters can't fit in. Keeps your dogs, cats and chickens safe, but you can still get rid of the rats, and poison is the only way I've ever found that works.

He told me that in order for a mouse (or rat) to be killed by bait it would have to eat more than one block of it and so unless I was actually feeding it in large amounts to my birds, the few small pieces the birds may find would not hurt them. They are not species specific in general, except for one called Rode-trol; (http://benedaniels.com/rodetrol.htm) which is touted to be rodent specific. As a former Vet tech, I CAN tell you that there are many cases of pet poisonings from the usual rat poisons, Malrin, TomCat, OneBite, and the most common blue one I can't remember the name of. Not often a good outcome for the pets.I am too concious of the risk to use any of them, and I shudder at the thought of glue traps. Which leaves the Rode-trol. We put it out in the garage. I can't swear to it, but there are no longer any rats in my garage. However, it is entirely possible that they all moved to the shed which adjoins the chicken house, as there was a great supply of cow feed. I will try the Rode-trol there when I get the nerve, and report. Whatever lives in there is apparently live-trap savvy...
