If they are not laying yet I would just leave the nest boxes closed off for a while until they are in the habit of roosting. You say roost pole, is it round? Chickens usually prefer a flat, wider surface. I found 2x4s work best.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] hens sleep in nest box but not on roost
So, my hens like sleeping in their nest box where they then poop all night. They have a roost pole but never use it. Tonight, I've tried moving them out and blocking the opening to the nest box. Boy were they pissed. Any other ideas on how to get them to roost instead? Oh, it might help to show you my coop....

They're not laying yet but I have tried putting golf balls in the box to show them that they've got the wrong idea but unfortunately they don't seem to get it.
