Hi Dawn
I was having the same problem because none of my nesting boxes had a roof or anything to keep them from sitting on the edge and pooping in the box. They were just an open box and I was having to clean them out like every other day (talk about a pain in the butt to do). Then hubby made me those types of nest that you see where they have to go inside and lay their eggs and it has a slanted roof so they can't poop in the nesting box. This made a huge difference where I don't get dirty eggs all the time the only time I get the dirty eggs is when they lay in the old boxes that we still have in there. I keep pestering hubby to make me some more boxes. Also the boxes are up off the ground so I'm sure that helps too. I have noticed also the only time they break eggs open and eat them is with the old boxes I have had some eggs broken in the new nesting boxes but that's because they kicked out all the hay and bedding from the center that I had in there. I'll be more than happy to send you pics of my nesting boxes to give you an idea. Hope this helps.

I recall a comment my mom said once when someone mentioned horse expenses. Her wise retort was "I can use the money for horses now and keep the kids active and out of trouble, or I can use it later on therapy or anti-drug dependency programs. I chose horses"

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] nesting boxes
The adolescent chickens I bought are roosting in/on the nesting boxes and pooping in them...I'm thinking they don't like the roost...or the roosters and the bigger hens are kicking them off the roost. Unfortunately, the older hens are now finding other places to lay (the barn, under the porch) because their boxes are poopy. Any ideas? Thanks, Dawn
