Since we deworm our goats on a regular schedule and always have Ivermectin on hand, we use it on our dogs once monthly.  To date it has never failed.
 
And as you show below it's expensive to treat, less so to prevent.

Please remember that any dog that has been treated for heart worm will need to be on medications for the rest of his life.  Not just for the mosquito season.  I learned the hard way, and lost my doberman to it after he had already been treated, the vet failed to inform me that he would always need the meds.  I currently have a American Bulldog that we rescued, treated for heart worm, and now takes a pill every month ($9.50 in MI) to make sure he will not be re-infested.  Good luck with your new pal!  Debbie
