[CHICKENS-101] Re: Ideal Hatchery

Hi George,

Thanks for the info. regarding ordering chicks.  I do have the McMurray Catalogue and really love it.  I've been reading it every day for a month!  :)

So since McMurray is closest to me-- right in Iowa and I'm in southern WI maybe it would probably be best to order from them, so the chicks don't have to travel so far and so long, and hopefully not get so chilled.  (Even though Ideal has better prices (so hard for me to pass up a deal!  :)

I'm sorry about your 40 chicks that were DOA.  I bet Ideal got you a new set of chicks, but it still is sad to see the little ones not make it.  What time of year did you order those chicks?  Are you in NH?

You said not to order too early.....  how early would be too early for me in chilly WI do you think?  I was thinking of getting my birds shipped here in late March or early April and then keeping them inside for about three weeks or four weeks and then transferring them to a hen house outside after that.

Yes, I've been having problems with yahoo today too.  I keep trying to join a group for people with guinea hens.  No, I don't want the guineas for their eggs.  I'd like a bird like watch dog who would eat bugs, especially the brown recluse spiders who bit several of us the past few summers.  Our neighbors have guineas so we know how loud they can be as they would come visit.  But they are such charming and unique animals we'd like a few around here to call our own.

The only problem I'm having with purchasing guinea hens is that McMurray wants me to order 30 at a time.  Maybe I'll order the giuneas from Ideal.... or find a local breeder who sells them.

Thanks for the help again!

Truly,

Britta in WI

If you scroll way down on the blog to last summer you can see live footage of our neighbors guinea hens who came to visit:
